General Overview:
The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) represents 26,000 academic and general staff in Universities and other tertiary education providers. The NTEU has a vacancy for one Industrial Officer and one Organiser for its Division Office based in Hobart.
Job Description:
Industrial Officer (full time)
The typical duties of this position include:
• Provide industrial advice and assistance to members, Branches, and Divisions, on industrial matters and industrial disputes, and the enforcement and implementation of Enterprise Agreements and Awards.
• Negotiate workplace grievances/issues and industrial disputes with management.
• As part of a team involving Division or National industrial staff, participate in the Branch Enterprise Bargaining negotiations.
• Research, prepare and/or advocate cases before Fair Work Australia or other tribunals as part of a team, or alone on less complex or non-strategic matters.
• Research, prepare and/or advocate cases and issues before internal university or management bodies, and speak in union and other public forums.
• Conduct research, prepare papers and reports on industrial matters, and provide articles, information and ideas for Union publications.
Applications for the position of Industrial Officer may apply for a Level 6 position (salary in the range $75,897 to $83,203 plus 17% super) or a Level 7 position (salary in the range $86,128 to $95,091 plus 17% super) depending on qualifications and experience.
It is expected that the person appointed to this position will have a commitment to unionism and some experience in industrial negotiations and/or advocacy. Knowledge of the tertiary education industry would be an advantage.
Organiser (0.8 or 4 days per week)
The typical duties of this position include:
• General administration for the Division and workplace committees, including the maintenance of correspondence, financial and membership records and notices/minutes of meetings.
• Visit members and potential members on a systematic and regular basis across all work areas of the University of Tasmania including entities of the University.
• Undertake/propose and organise recruitment and campaign activities.
• Maintain and service delegates’ networks and prepare papers and information for delegates.
• Deal with members’ enquiries and, where necessary, accompany members to meetings with supervisors and managers.
• With support and advice from Division or Branch Officers and/or the Division Industrial Officer, deal with individual grievances and disputes.
Applications for the position of Organiser may apply for a Level 4 position (full time salary in the range $59,042 to $66,069 plus 17% super) or a Level 5 position (full time salary in the range $67,226 to $72,683 plus 17% super) depending on qualifications and experience.
It is expected that the person appointed to this position will have a commitment to unionism and some previous experience as an industrial organiser. Knowledge of the tertiary education industry would be an advantage.
